Phantom to End Monad Support on Aug. 26
Monad Co-founder Responds to Phantom Removing Support: The Wallet Does Not Allow Users to Add Networks Themselves, Time Will Tell Which Strategy Is More Beneficial for EVM
What isMonad
OverviewMonad is a high-performance Layer-1 blockchain fully compatible with Ethereum bytecode (EVM). It was developed by the team at Category Labs (formerly Monad Labs), with its mainnet and TGE occurring on November 24, 2025. The native token MON is used for gas fees, staking, validator rewards, and governance through the Monad Foundation. The network is positioned as an EVM-equivalent platform capable of processing up to 10,000 TPS with sub-second finality.
The protocol is designed to solve the scalability issues of traditional EVM networks without compromising decentralization or compatibility with the Ethereum toolset. Monad utilizes its own MonadBFT consensus (a derivative of HotStuff), parallel transaction execution with optimistic concurrency control, asynchronous separation of ordering and execution, as well as the MonadDB database and the RaptorCast block propagation protocol. This achieves a block time of approximately 400 ms and finality of around 800 ms - metrics comparable to high-performance L1s, while still allowing unmodified Solidity smart contracts to run.
What Makes It Unique
The main difference between Monad and competitors like Solana, Sui, or Aptos is its full bytecode compatibility with the EVM. Developers do not need to rewrite smart contract code; they can port existing dApps with minimal effort. At the same time, Monad offers throughput close to non-EVM L1s through parallel execution, JIT compilation of EVM bytecode, and pipelined transaction processing.
Monad Features
Technical Information
The network operates under MonadBFT, a pipelined BFT consensus providing two-round finality and fork resistance. Blocks are created every 400 ms, with finality achieved in 800 ms; "speculative" finality is possible after the first round (~400 ms). Transactions are ordered linearly and then executed asynchronously and in parallel using optimistic concurrency control. MonadDB is a custom state database built in C++/Rust, optimized for Merkle-Patricia-Trie and SSDs, preventing storage bottlenecks under high loads. RaptorCast uses erasure coding and structured multicast trees for efficient block propagation among validators.
The execution environment includes JIT compilation of frequently used bytecode segments into native x86-64 code with caching for hot contracts. The codebase supports EIP-1559 (base fee burning), EIP-4844 (blob transactions), and EIP-7702 (delegated authorization). Network identifier: Chain ID eip155:143. Standard Ethereum JSON-RPC methods work without modification. Infrastructure providers (Alchemy, The Graph) and explorers (MonadScan, MonadVision) provide access to the network.
Tokenomics
The initial supply at mainnet launch (November 24, 2025) was 100,000,000,000 MON. Distribution: Ecosystem Development 38.5% (fully unlocked at launch, managed by the Monad Foundation), Team 27%, Investors 19.7%, Public Sale up to 7.5%, Category Labs Treasury 3.95%, Airdrop 3.3%. On launch day, 10.8% entered public circulation (public sale + airdrop), with an additional 38.5% unlocked for the ecosystem fund - totaling 49.4% circulating from day one. Locked categories (50.6%) cannot participate in staking for the first year. Issuance is fixed: 25 MON per successful block is awarded to validators and delegators, resulting in approximately 2 billion MON per year (~2% initial issuance) before accounting for burning. The base gas fee is burned according to the EIP-1559 model; the priority fee goes to the validator. Unlocks: team and investors have a one-year cliff, followed by linear vesting over 3 years; full unlocking is expected by Q4 2029. The public sale on Coinbase was priced at $0.025 per MON. The airdrop, comprising 3.3% of the initial supply (snapshot taken September 30, 2025), was distributed to approximately 230,000 recipients.
Security MON
The mainnet client underwent a public audit competition on Code4rena (September 15 - October 12, 2025, with the final report published February 26, 2026). Four critical (High) and seven medium (Medium) unique issues were identified. Among the critical issues were incorrect application of the EIP-1559 gas cap to legacy transactions (H-01), a divergent validation order for EIP-7702 between the transaction pool and block validation (H-02), and two additional denial-of-service attacks (H-03/H-04). The report includes recommendations for fixes.
After launch, Monad warned about phishing scams mimicking spoofed ERC-20 Transfer logs - these did not affect the network's consensus. On May 19, 2026, the Echo Protocol on Monad suffered an unauthorized minting of approximately 1,000 eBTC (~$77 million at the time), of which approximately $0.87 million was stolen, with the remainder frozen. The incident was related to role management and cross-chain flows within Echo, not Monad's consensus. As of July 2026, no official bounty program for the L1 client (Immunefi/Certora) was found; hardening efforts are primarily focused on open audits and public code review.

Investors and Funds
Monad raised funding in several rounds. A seed round of $19 million closed on February 14, 2023, led by Dragonfly Capital with participation from Placeholder Capital, Lemniscap, Shima Capital, Finality Capital, and angels (Cobie, Hasu). A Series A of $225 million (other sources cite $220.5 million) was announced in April 2024; led by Paradigm, with investors including Electric Capital and Greenoaks. The valuation was approximately $3 billion. A public token sale on Coinbase (November 17-22, 2025) raised up to $269 million at $0.025 per MON. Total private funding is estimated at approximately $262 million.
Key Partnerships and Ecosystem
Ecosystem integrations span several areas. Custody: Hex Trust (first custodian, July 2024). Stablecoins: Circle - native USDC and CCTP v2 (April 2025). Oracles and Infrastructure: Chainlink (Data Feeds, Data Streams, CCIP, April 2025), Alchemy (February 2025), Elliptic (compliance screening, 60th blockchain). Payment Partnerships: Mastercard (Crypto Partner Program, April 2026). Crypto Wallet: MetaMask launched Money Account on Monad, integrated with Mastercard (July 2026). DeFi: Aave V3 deployed in July 2026; PancakeSwap, Orderly Network, LayerZero. Institutional Staking: Figment, Chorus One, Everstake, Gemini (approved by NYDFS for staking in February 2026). The Monad Foundation acquired Portal Labs (July 2025); former Visa Director of Global Crypto Products Raj Parekh leads payments and stablecoins. Integration of cbBTC via Chainlink CCIP (March 2026) and RWA projects, including Korean government treasury bonds from Etherfuse. By May 2026, the network's TVL exceeded $410 million, largely driven by institutional capital.
Potential
Technologically, Monad provides EVM compatibility with performance comparable to Solana and Sui, lowering the barrier for porting liquidity and applications from the Ethereum ecosystem. Institutional adoption is supported by regulated staking services (Gemini, NYDFS) and custody (Hex Trust). Partnerships with Circle and Mastercard pave the way for payment solutions and asset tokenization. An active residency program and grants incentivize dApp development. With increased demand for gas, EIP-1559 burning can partially offset inflation, and the staking mechanism encourages long-term token holding. Attention to regulatory compliance across jurisdictions (MiCA-compliant whitepaper, NYDFS approval) boosts institutional confidence.
Risks [Identified by Finkonkurs AI Analytics System]
Regulatory: Although MON has avoided direct lawsuits in the US, classification uncertainty (commodity vs. security) remains; staking regulations could tighten. Technical: The Code4rena audit revealed several critical vulnerabilities; the completeness and timeliness of their fixes remain in question. The Echo Protocol incident highlighted vulnerabilities in cross-chain interactions, although Monad's core was unaffected. Tokenomics: The one-year cliff for team and investors (November 2026) portends a significant increase in circulating supply, which could create downward price pressure. Competitive: Solana, Sui, Aptos, and Sei are actively developing, offering their own performance; Monad's success depends on whether EVM compatibility remains an advantage over native alternatives. Network usage in the first six months was low (single-digit percentages of peak capacity), which may indicate limited demand given the current set of dApps.
