What isGHO

Overview

Launched
Jul 2023
Origin

A decentralized overcollateralized stablecoin pegged to the US dollar and native to the Aave protocol. Issuance occurs on demand through governance-approved "facilitators" - smart contracts that mint GHO against collateral deposited by users into Aave v3/v4 pools and burn tokens when debt is repaid. The key difference from traditional stablecoins: 100% of the interest paid by GHO borrowers goes to the Aave DAO treasury, not to liquidity providers. The launch on Ethereum mainnet took place in July 2023; the token was subsequently deployed on Arbitrum, Base, and Monad via cross-chain bridges based on Chainlink CCIP. All parameters - rates, issuance limits, and stability modules - are managed in a decentralized manner through Aave DAO votes.

The purpose of GHO is to serve as a unit of account within the Aave ecosystem and beyond, providing a decentralized, transparent, and community-governed stablecoin. Unlike fiat-backed counterparts (USDC, USDT), whose reserves are held in bank accounts, GHO is collateralized by crypto assets (ETH, wstETH, USDC, etc.) locked in the Aave protocol. This eliminates the risk of fund freezes by regulators but creates dependence on liquidation procedures and collateral volatility. Compared to MakerDAO's DAI (USDS), GHO uses a "facilitator" model with flexible issuance limits and does not rely on a single stability module; compared to Frax and Ethena, it differs by lacking algorithmic seigniorage or centralized derivatives. As of mid-2026, the circulating supply of GHO reached approximately 599 million tokens, of which more than half are locked in the Savings GHO module for passive income.

Features of GHO

Technical Information

The base layer is Ethereum mainnet (Proof-of-Stake consensus, 12-second slots, economic finality ~12.8 minutes). Cross-chain functionality is implemented via Chainlink CCIP with a lock-and-mint model: GHO is locked on Ethereum, and an equivalent amount is minted on the target L2. DAO-set speed limits and freeze capabilities exist for each direction. On Arbitrum (activated July 2, 2024) and Base (February 10, 2025), bridging operates under the Cross-Chain Facilitator. On July 2, 2026, Aave v3.7 and GHO were deployed on Monad - a high-performance Layer 1; the Monad Foundation allocated $15 million for first-year incentives and purchased 10 million GHO for initial liquidity. The network also includes a FlashMinter for atomic arbitrage within a single block and the GHO Stability Module (GSM) - 1:1 swap rails between GHO and USDC/USDT with a configurable pricing strategy. In 2025-2026, updates introduced RemoteGSM for L2s and the V4 architecture, integrating GHO into Aave's hub-and-spoke liquidity model.

Tokenomics

GHO has no fixed maximum supply - issuance is endogenously determined by borrowing demand. Issuance is limited by DAO-set "bucket capacity" for each facilitator. At launch (July 2023): Aave v3 Ethereum pool - 100 million GHO, FlashMinter - 2 million GHO. The borrowing rate was initially 1.5% APR; stkAAVE holders received a 30% discount down to 25% of the bucket. All interest payments (100%) go to the Aave DAO treasury, making GHO a source of protocol revenue rather than an interest-bearing asset for depositors. Token burning occurs upon debt repayment or through GSM swaps; there are no algorithmic burns. From mid-2025, the Savings GHO (sGHO) module was introduced - staking without lock-up or slashing risk, yielding income from protocol fees. By the end of 2025, more than 54% of the circulating supply was locked in sGHO. In 2026, part of the issuance was transitioned to the Umbrella/sGHO mechanism with a fixed APR and an ERC-4626 vault.

GHO Security

The GHO code has undergone audits by several independent firms: OpenZeppelin (first audit before mainnet), Sigma Prime, and ABDK (before launch). Certora performed formal verification of the token logic. Broad audits of the Aave v3/v4 codebase (Trail of Bits, OpenZeppelin, Sigma Prime, ABDK, ChainSecurity) are also relevant since GHO is minted through these contracts. A bug bounty program on Immunefi covers all GHO subsystems: ERC-20 (upgradeable and non-upgradeable), reserves in the Aave Pool (GhoAToken, GhoVariableDebtToken, etc.), FlashMinter, GSM/GSM4626, CCIP bridge, GHO Stewards, and remote facilitators, with maximum rewards up to limits depending on the PoC. In 2026, a restructuring of the bug bounty with Sherlock and Cantina was discussed, but GHO remains under Immunefi. Known incidents: after launch on July 16, 2023, GHO traded with a deviation from the peg (up to several cents below $1) due to a low rate (1.5%) and lack of holding incentives. Full peg recovery occurred by February 2024 thanks to a series of rate increases to ~6.2% APR, the introduction of GSM, and the Merit program. No smart contract exploits of GHO have been recorded (as of July 2026).

Which Exchanges Trade GHO

GHO is primarily listed on decentralized exchanges: the largest liquidity pools are on Uniswap v3/v4 (GHO/USDC, GHO/USDT), Curve Finance (GHO/crvUSD, GHO/WETH), and Fluid (GHO/USDC, GHO/sUSDe). Among centralized platforms, GHO is available on Bitget and Gate.io; it does not have direct listings on Binance (available via Binance Web3 Wallet) or Coinbase. To incentivize liquidity, the Aave DAO launched the GHO CEX Earn Incentive Program (mid-2025), providing market makers with direct access to the GHO Stability Module for arbitrage of peg deviations and building order books on CEXs. The all-time high was recorded on March 13, 2026, during a brief illiquid spike; the all-time low occurred in the post-launch period when the price dropped to $0.96-0.975.

Investors and Funds

No separate investment rounds, SAFT, ICO, IDO, or IEO were conducted for GHO itself. Issuance is entirely driven by borrowing demand through Aave. Historical fundraising pertains only to the AAVE token (e.g., a public sale of $100 million in 2020) and does not relate to GHO. Thus, GHO has no venture investors or fund allocations.

Key Partnerships and Ecosystem

Chainlink - strategic partner for cross-chain infrastructure: CCIP enables GHO bridging to Arbitrum, Base, and Monad with programmable transfers and rate limits; Chainlink Data Feeds are used for oracles; Smart Value Recapture (SVR) - for returning liquidation MEV; Runtime Environment (CRE) - for automation of governance. Monad Foundation - at launch on Monad (July 2026) provided $15 million in incentives and purchased 10 million GHO for over 6 months for initial liquidity. Aave Horizon - an institutional RWA market (launched August 2025) where qualified investors can borrow GHO, USDC, and RLUSD against tokenized assets (Superstate USTB/USCC, Centrifuge JRTSY/JAAA, Circle USYC). By early 2026, Horizon attracted over $600 million in deposits and $200 million in borrowed funds. GHO Liquidity Committee (created in October 2023) manages liquidity, later integrated into the Aave Liquidity Committee. GHO Stewards (April 2024) - a 3-of-4 multisig involving Growth (Aave-Chan Initiative), Risk (Chaos Labs), and Finance (TokenLogic + karpatkey) for operational parameter adjustments.

Potential

Technological factors: the facilitator model with fine-tuned parameters allows monetary policy adaptation without hard forks; integration with Aave v3/v4 creates organic borrowing demand, and all interest flows to the DAO treasury, which can be used for AAVE buybacks or development funding. Cross-chain expansion via CCIP increases accessibility on L2s and new L1s (Monad) with external incentives. Market factors: institutional demand through Aave Horizon (RWA collateral) and corporate treasuries (Monad Foundation) forms a stable inflow. The Savings GHO program keeps a large portion of the supply staked, reducing sell pressure and creating a base for payment liquidity. Obtaining a MiCA license (via Push Virtual Assets Ireland Limited, November 2025) opens legal gateways for fiat on/off ramps in the EEA. Further V4 development promises even deeper integration of GHO into the Aave economy.

Risks [Identified by Finkonkurs AI Analytics System]

Regulatory: The adoption of the GENIUS Act in the US (July 2025) prohibits payment stablecoins from paying interest to holders directly; GHO circumvents this via Savings GHO, where users actively stake tokens. In the EU, a MiCA license has been obtained, reducing regulatory risk but requiring reporting compliance. In Singapore and Dubai, marketing of Savings GHO is restricted to avoid classification as a public securities offering. Technical risks: Dependence on the correctness of Aave v3/v4 smart contracts and CCIP bridges; despite audits, errors in facilitator or GSM logic are theoretically possible. Concentration of minting authority only to approved facilitators reduces but does not eliminate collusive governance attacks. Peg risks: History shows that with insufficient rates and no GSM, the stablecoin can deviate from $1 for extended periods; although the peg is currently stable, rapid market changes may require emergency DAO intervention. Competitive pressure: USDC, USDT, and DAI/USDS dominate DeFi liquidity, and GHO struggles to compete with their network effects. New stablecoins (frxUSD, crvUSD, USDe) also compete for market share. Supply concentration: Over 54% of GHO is staked in sGHO, limiting circulating liquidity and potentially making the price vulnerable to sudden sentiment shifts.

Related Individuals

Stani Kulechov

Founder and CEO of Aave Labs (part of Avara). Full name - Stani Kulechov, X account @StaniKulechov. Started programming at age 13, dropped out of school to code full-time, later returned and earned a Master of Laws degree from the University of Helsinki (2020). While still a student, he studied blockchain applications. In 2017, he founded ETHLend - one of the first DeFi lending platforms on Ethereum, on the basis of which the Aave protocol was launched in January 2020. In July 2022, he proposed to the Aave DAO to introduce the GHO stablecoin, designing it as an overcollateralized asset integrated into the Aave v3 infrastructure. Kulechov has publicly articulated GHO's role in cross-chain expansion and revenue generation for the DAO. He is the key public figure of the project, but all decisions on GHO parameters are made through DAO votes.

Other members of the Aave Labs team directly involved in GHO development (engineers, CTO, product managers) are not identified by name in open sources with specific contributions. Management of GHO parameters is delegated to service providers: GHO Stewards (Aave-Chan Initiative, Chaos Labs, TokenLogic + karpatkey) and the Liquidity Committee. The legal entity that obtained the MiCA license is Push Virtual Assets Ireland Limited (a subsidiary of Aave Labs).

What do people think and say about the project? (Sentiment)

The community generally views GHO positively as a key revenue source for the Aave DAO and an important element of DeFi infrastructure. Main discussions focus on the efficiency of the peg maintenance mechanisms (GSM, borrowing rates) and the pace of cross-chain expansion. Criticism mainly concerned the initial depeg period in 2023, which was corrected through a series of governance decisions. The project's reputation remains high due to transparent governance and audits.

Where and how to buy GHO?

The token can be purchased on decentralized exchanges such as Uniswap (GHO/USDC, GHO/USDT pairs) and Curve Finance (GHO/crvUSD). Among centralized platforms, GHO is available on Bitget and Gate.io. A wallet supporting the Ethereum network or a bridge for L2 networks is required for purchase.

How does GHO differ from other stablecoins?

Unlike centralized USDT or USDC, GHO is fully collateralized by crypto assets in Aave pools and is governed decentrally through the DAO. Interest payments on GHO loans are directed 100% to the Aave DAO treasury, not to liquidity providers. The 'facilitator' model with flexible minting limits and the GSM stability module enable fine-tuning of monetary policy.

What similar tokens exist?

The closest analogs include DAI (MakerDAO) - also a decentralized overcollateralized stablecoin, and crvUSD from Curve. Unlike DAI, GHO did not use a Peg Stability Module as its primary tool from launch, relying instead on borrowing rates and the GSM, which was introduced later. Compared to FRAX, GHO avoids algorithmic issuance, remaining fully collateralized.
