BNB

It is the native cryptocurrency of the BNB Chain ecosystem, used for gas payments, validator staking, and fee settlement across all networks in the stack: BNB Smart Chain (the main executable L1), the opBNB L2 rollup based on OP Stack, and the decentralized storage network BNB Greenfield. The token was created in 2017 as part of the Binance exchange ICO; the total supply was 200 million coins, of which 100 million were sold publicly. BNB has a deflationary model: through Auto-Burn and real-time gas burning (BEP‑95) mechanisms, the supply is intended to decrease to 100 million. opBNB uses the OP Stack with modified parameters: 0.25 s per block, up to 4500+ transfers per second in benchmarks, and a 7-day withdrawal window (via fraud proofs). BSC also supports EIP‑1559 for fee structure. BNB Greenfield is a specialized storage network with cross-chain interaction capabilities with BSC.

As of June 2026, the BNB Chain network hosts over 179,000 on-chain AI agents. BSC's average daily activity in Q1 2024 was approximately 1.4 million active addresses, with an average of ~4 million transactions per day over the previous 12 months at minimal gas prices.

Tokenomics

Initial supply: 200 million BNB (2017). Distribution: 50% (100 million) - public sale, 40% (80 million) - team, 10% (20 million) - angel investors. The team had a four-year vesting schedule (per Grok data). The ICO took place from June 26 to July 3, 2017, at a price of ~$0.15 per BNB (1 ETH = 2700 BNB, 1 BTC = 20,000 BNB), raising approximately $15 million.

BNB Security

At the core network level, the BNB Chain bug bounty program offers rewards of up to $100,000 for critical vulnerabilities in nodes/clients. Many ecosystem projects also run their own programs through Immunefi.

Major incidents:

• October 6, 2022 - exploit of the BSC Token Hub bridge: the attacker forged an MPT (Merkle/IAVL) proof, allowing the minting of 2 million BNB (then worth ~$586 million). Validators temporarily halted the chain, and a significant portion of the funds was frozen; approximately $127 million was withdrawn before the freeze. The incident led to strengthened proof verification.
• December 2, 2022 - exploit of Ankr aBNBc: a malicious contract allowed unlimited minting of aBNBc (~$5 million in direct losses), causing a depeg of Helio/HAY tokens. Ankr described it as an inside attack and issued replacement ankrBNB for users. Although not a blockchain vulnerability itself, the incident significantly impacted BSC DeFi.

The AvengerDAO coalition (including CertiK, Hashdit, SlowMist, BlockSec, Verichains, and others) coordinates user protection and threat intelligence sharing. According to the 2023 report, losses on BSC decreased significantly compared to previous periods.

To prevent similar attacks, a Fork Detection mechanism and disaster recovery procedures (including temporary chain halts and forced upgrades) have been implemented.

BNB trades with high liquidity on centralized platforms: Binance, Kraken, KuCoin, Bybit, MEXC, Bitget. The coin is not available on Coinbase or Kraken US due to regulatory restrictions.
