Ilya Lichtenstein breached Bitfinex in August 2016 and took about 120,000 bitcoin, then spent six years attempting to launder it with his wife Heather Morgan through chain hopping, darknet markets and fictitious identities.
Pleaded guilty in 2023 to money laundering conspiracy and admitted carrying out the 2016 Bitfinex hack; sentenced to five years in November 2024. The stolen bitcoin was largely recovered by law enforcement and returned to the exchange.
