What isOptimism
OverviewThis is the governance token for the Superchain ecosystem and the OP Mainnet network - a Layer 2 (L2) on top of Ethereum that uses optimistic rollup technology. The project was founded by a team that previously worked on Plasma at the Ethereum Foundation and launched on mainnet in 2021. OP grants holders the right to vote on protocol upgrades, treasury allocation, and economic parameters, as well as to participate in the Retroactive Public Goods Funding (RetroPGF) program. A key differentiator is the modular OP Stack, on which interconnected Superchain chains are built, including Base by Coinbase and Soneium by Sony.
The token was issued in May-June 2022 alongside the launch of the Optimism Collective - a two-tier governance system consisting of the Token House and the Citizens' House. The OP Mainnet network is an optimistic rollup that publishes transaction data on Ethereum and uses a fault proof mechanism to ensure integrity. Unlike competitors, Optimism focuses on horizontal scaling through the Superchain: a unified network of compatible L2s that share liquidity, security, and protocol upgrades.
What Makes It Unique
The Superchain concept allows corporate partners - Coinbase, Sony, Kraken, Celo - to launch their own L2 chains based on the OP Stack, inheriting all core improvements. The OP token does not just govern a single network but coordinates the development of the entire ecosystem, including the distribution of sequencer revenue through fee vaults and Superchain channels. Unlike Arbitrum, which emphasizes vertical scaling (L3 via Orbit), Optimism unifies the stack, simplifying cross-chain interoperability.
Optimism Features
Technical Information
The network uses the modular OP Stack architecture: op-node (consensus/derivation), op-geth (execution, EVM-equivalent), op-batcher (data publication to L1 with EIP-4844 blob support), op-proposer/challenger (output roots and disputes). Blocks are produced every ~2 seconds; since September 2025, Flashblocks have been implemented, reducing this to 250 milliseconds. Consensus uses a single sequencer (currently centralized) with a private mempool; economic finality occurs after L1 finality and the fault proof dispute window. Since June 10, 2024, permissionless fault proofs have been operational on mainnet ("Stage 1" per L2Beat classification), with the Security Council capable of emergency intervention.
Major upgrades: Bedrock (June 6, 2023) - modular stack redesign; Ecotone (March 14, 2024) - EIP-4844 integration to reduce DA costs; Granite (September 11, 2024) - enhanced fault proof security; Upgrade 16 (June 20, 2025) - gas limit increase to 500 million units; BPO2 (January 2026) - Ethereum blob target increase from 10 to 15. The token contract on OP Mainnet is deployed at the deterministic address 0x4200000000000000000000000000000000000042.
Tokenomics
Initial supply - 4,294,967,296 OP. Distribution: 19% airdrops, 20% RetroPGF, 25% ecosystem fund (Governance Fund, Partner Fund, Seed Fund, unallocated), 17% investors, 19% core contributors. Target long-term inflation is 2% annually (governance can adjust); in 2023, an erroneous configuration of 20% was discovered and fixed. As of early July 2026, approximately 50.28% of the total supply is in circulation (≈2.16 billion OP). The next unlock is 31.34 million OP on July 11, 2026, for the Seed Fund and core contributors. Sequencer revenue accumulates in contract fee vaults and, through governance, is directed to grants and RetroPGF. The unused portion of airdrops (about 13% of the 19% reserve) remains for future distributions.
Security OP
Audits have been conducted by Trail of Bits (2020, 2022), Sigma Prime (Bedrock), Cantina (MCP L1, fault proofs), Spearbit (Base components), and Trust (SuperchainConfig). The Granite upgrade included fixes noted by auditors from Spearbit, Cantina, and Code4rena. A bug bounty program is active on Immunefi with a maximum payout of $2,000,042; over $2.6 million has been paid since the program's inception. The largest payout was $2,000,042 to researcher "saurik" for an "OETH infinite mint" vulnerability.
Known incidents: On June 8-10, 2022, market maker Wintermute lost 20 million OP due to an incorrect address deployment order on L1/L2; the attacker held the funds, then returned 17 million, kept 2 million as a bounty, and sold 1 million. On June 25, 2026, Coinbase reported temporary disruptions in transfers via the Optimism network, resolved within 48 hours with no loss of funds. In August 2023, an exploit of the Exactly Protocol on Optimism led to user losses but did not affect the L2 consensus. Isolated "unsafe head stall" incidents have also been recorded on the network status page.
Exchanges Where It Is Traded

Investors and Funds
Three rounds were raised: a seed round of $3.5 million (January 15, 2020, led by Paradigm and IDEO CoLab Ventures); a Series A of $25 million (February 2021, led by a16z); and a Series B of $150 million at a $1.65 billion valuation (March 2022, co-led by Paradigm and a16z). The token is included in the Grayscale Smart Contract Platform Ex-Ethereum Fund. Major holders among early investors include Paradigm and a16z, whose tokens are subject to multi-year linear vesting continuing until 2029.
Key Partnerships and Ecosystem
The largest consumer of the stack is Base (Coinbase's chain), launched in 2023 and inheriting all OP Stack upgrades. Sony, through Soneium, is building an entertainment L2 network; Kraken is developing Ink for DeFi/trading; Bitpanda launched Vision, a regulated financial chain for Europe; Celo migrated to the OP Stack for mobile payments; Upbit launched Giwa.
In November 2024, Chainlink integrated Data Streams, Functions, and VRF on OP Mainnet, and Optimism joined the Chainlink Scale program. The Synthetix protocol deployed its synthetic assets on Optimism for lower fees. Ecosystem projects include Velodrome (DEX with vote-escrowed model), Lyra (options), and Exactly Protocol (lending). Support is provided through grants and RetroPGF.
Potential
The network has transitioned to block production in 250 ms (Flashblocks), opening opportunities for high-frequency applications. Cross-chain interoperability within the Superchain has been implemented (Upgrade 16, Upgrade 16a). The "Quantum Sunset" plan has been announced for January 2036 - a mandatory transition to post-quantum signatures, making Optimism the first major L2 with a specific timeline for quantum resilience. Institutional support (Coinbase, Sony, Grayscale, Bitpanda) and a governance model focused on public goods create a long-term foundation. The token's value may grow alongside the aggregate fee revenue of the Superchain.
Risks [Identified by Finkonkurs AI Analytics System]
Regulatory: The U.S. SEC has not yet classified OP as a security in lawsuits against exchanges (e.g., SEC v. Coinbase), but uncertainty remains. In the EU, the MiCA regulation came into full effect on July 1, 2026; the Optimism Foundation has aligned its operations with whitepaper and disclosure requirements. In Singapore and Hong Kong, OP is subject to standard digital asset rules.
Technical: The network remains at "Stage 1" - a centralized sequencer paired with a Security Council that can forcibly intervene. Full withdrawal decentralization (Stage 2) has not yet been implemented. Potential vulnerabilities exist in the fault proof game.
Tokenomic: Persistent inflationary pressure (2% per year) and ongoing unlocks (next major unlock: 31.34 million OP on July 11, 2026). High concentration among the foundation and early investors, with linear vesting until 2029.
Competitive: Arbitrum retains a larger share of TVL market share; ZKsync and Starknet offer faster finality (ZK-rollups); Polygon is developing an aggregated zkEVM network. The growth of Base as the dominant Superchain chain could weaken direct OP governance.

What do people think and say about the project?
The community generally views Optimism's technical achievements positively, especially the implementation of fault proofs and the Superchain concept. The main debates revolve around the token unlock schedule, which creates price pressure, and competition with Arbitrum. The project's reputation remains high due to governance transparency and support for public goods through RetroPGF.
Where and how to buy OP?
The OP token is available on all major centralized exchanges, including Binance, Coinbase, Kraken, OKX, and Bybit. On decentralized exchanges, the main liquidity is concentrated on Velodrome Finance (the native DEX of OP Mainnet), as well as on Uniswap V3 and Curve Finance. To purchase, simply fund an account on one of these platforms and swap a stablecoin or ETH for OP.
How does Optimism differ from other L2 tokens?
Unlike Arbitrum, which focuses on vertical scaling through L3 (Orbit), Optimism promotes the horizontal Superchain strategy - a unified network of interconnected blockchains based on the OP Stack. This allows major projects like Base from Coinbase and World Chain to operate in a shared ecosystem with unified security and liquidity. The OP token is used exclusively for governance, not for staking or fees.
What similar tokens exist?
The main competitor is Arbitrum (ARB) - also a governance token of an optimistic rollup. In the ZK-rollup segment, counterparts include ZKsync (ZK) and Starknet (STRK). Polygon (POL) also competes in the multi-chain infrastructure space but uses a different technical approach.
